Key Indicators for the Right Time for Chrome Plating

1. Visual Indicators (The Clearest Warning)
If any of the following are observed, action should not be delayed:

• Dullness on the chrome surface
• Fine scratches that can be felt with a fingernail
• Irregular glossy–matte areas
• Local chrome wear exposing the base steel

Rule: If the steel is visible, the intervention is already overdue.

2. Early Quality Signals in the Product
Before major issues appear, the mold indicates problems through:

• Directional streaks on the product surface
• Gloss variations from batch to batch
• Increased thickness fluctuations at the same settings
• Surface defects that did not previously exist

If chrome plating is applied at this stage:

• Dimensional accuracy and surface quality are restored
• No additional grinding is required
   

3. TIncreased Cleaning Frequency
A clear but often overlooked indicator:

• If a mold that previously required cleaning once a week now contaminates within 1–2 days,

The most common cause is:

• Micro-scratches and increased surface roughness of the chrome layer.

If chrome plating is applied at this stage:

• Cleaning intervals are extended
• Micro-scratches are eliminated
   

4. Timing Based on Raw Material and Service Life
Approximate field values (average):

• Pure PE, PP: 6–12 months
• CaCO₃-filled compounds: 3-6 months
• Glass-fiber-reinforced materials: 2–4 months
• PVC: 3–6 months
• Flame-retardant compounds: 2–3 months

5. Approaching Dimensional Tolerances
For profiles, pipes, or precision products:

• When mold dimensions reach 60–70% of the tolerance limit, it is time for chrome plating.

If plating is applied at this stage:

• Dimensions can be restored through grinding and chrome plating.
• Once tolerance limits are exceeded, recovery becomes significantly more difficult.
